Summer Holidays: Kids Off School, Weather's Gone Rogue! 🌦️
Your Sanity-Saving Guide to Harpenden's Indoor & Outdoor Adventures
So the kids are climbing the walls, it's rained three times already today, and you're desperately googling "fun activities near me" for the hundredth time this holiday? Fear not, fellow frazzled parents and entertainment-seekers! Harpenden's got your back with a week packed full of brilliant distractions. From beach-themed crafts (indoors, thank goodness) and pottery painting therapy to quiz nights where you can finally put that random trivia knowledge to good use. We've even thrown in some historic exhibitions, scenic walks for when the sun decides to show up, and live music for when you need a proper grown-up moment. So grab that coffee, take a deep breath, and let's tackle this week together! ☕✨
Thursday 7th August
9:30am-12pm: Games and Glue at High Street Methodist Church is serving up beachy vibes this week! 🏖️ Your primary school crew can dive into sandy crafts and seaside games, while the little ones enjoy the free play area. At just £2 per child, it's cheaper than a day trip to Brighton and definitely less sandy in your car!
3pm-5:15pm: Get your creative juices flowing at Glaze Time's pottery painting session at the Old Cock Inn! 🎨 Perfect for making memories with the kids or friends - just book ahead because nobody likes a pottery painting disappointment!
8pm: The Harpenden Arms is hosting their legendary Quiz Night! 🧠 Gather up to 6 of your cleverest (or most confident) mates for heated debates about 80s music and that famous picture round. You can book online or just rock up and hope for the best!
Friday 8th August
9am: THC Run Club gets the early birds moving - though this one's members only, so no gate-crashing! 🏃♀️
10am-12pm: High Street Methodist Church opens its doors for Stay & Play under 5s - completely free! Plus there's Lego and activities for older siblings, because nobody gets left out on our watch. 🧸
2pm: The Harpenden Bowling Club hosts their Friday Roll-ups where 30+ members compete to get closest to that elusive little white ball. 🎳 Find them on Spenser Road (second left off Milton Road from Station Road), and remember - flat-soled trainers only, so leave those Louboutins at home!
7-11pm: The George of Harpenden rounds off the evening with live music. 🎵
Saturday 9th August
All day: History buffs, this one's for you! The Harpenden Museum at The EMC has a fascinating new exhibition celebrating George Hogg (1915-1945). 🏛️ This remarkable Harpenden lad is virtually unknown here but is celebrated as a hero in China for marching 60 schoolboys 700 miles to safety from the invading Japanese army. Tragically, he died 80 years ago aged just 30. The museum's on the lower floor of the EMC at Rothamsted Park - open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
9pm-midnight: If you fancy some classic rock, The Donkeys take the stage at The Plough & Harrow! 🎸 This 5-piece band will have you headbanging (responsibly) all night long.
8pm-1am: And The George keeps the party going with their Saturday DJ spinning tunes! 🕺
Sunday 10th August
9:30am-2pm: Treasure hunters and bargain seekers, your time has come! The Redbourn Car Boot Sale at The Herts Showground is calling. 🚗 No booking needed - just rock up, pay on the day, and start hunting for those hidden gems among the, er, not-so-hidden junk!
Monday 11th August
10:30am-12pm: Ease into your Monday with a Coffee Morning at Harpenden Library. ☕ Perfect for a mid-morning caffeine fix and a good browse of the shelves.
3:45pm-4:45pm: The kids can get their building fix at Lego Club (ages 5+). 🧱 At £4.40 per session, it's essential to book ahead - these little plastic bricks are serious business!
Tuesday 12th August
2:15pm-2:45pm: StoryTime at Harpenden Library - everyone's welcome and donations are much appreciated! 📖
7pm: Fancy a scenic evening stroll? There's a gorgeous 4-mile walk starting from The Hollybush pub in Church End, Redbourn. The route takes you through Redbourn Common's tree-lined boulevard, past 'Porridge Pot' (yes, really!), through Knott Wood, and back via the Nickey Line. 🚶♀️ It's just £2 to cover costs and takes under 2 hours, with the option to stay for food and drinks at the pub afterwards - because what's a good walk without a good pint at the end? Book online here.
9pm: The Engineer hosts their Weekly Quiz with a maximum of 6 per team, £1 entry, and actual cash prizes! 🧠
Wednesday 13th August
10:30am-1pm: Start your Wednesday creatively with Glaze Time's morning session at The Inn on the Green. 🎨 It's wonderfully mindful pottery painting - perfect for catching up with friends or having some peaceful device-free time while creating keepsakes you'll treasure forever.
8pm: Finally, The Amble Inn Quiz kicks off to round off your week! 🤔
Ongoing Activities
Fancy getting muddy and making friends? If you're interested in getting into rugby, or getting the little ones into Mini's rugby, drop a line to [email protected]! 🏉 It's never too late to discover your inner warrior (or just enjoy watching the kids tire themselves out completely).
And book lovers, get excited! The Summer Reading Challenge at Harpenden Library is still going strong! 📚 This year's "Story Garden Crew" theme is perfect for getting kids excited about reading during the holidays. Any child who's a library member can join the adventure - read books, collect stickers, and become part of a reading quest that'll keep them busy all summer. It's like Pokémon but with books!
